  1. You mention that Indian Ringneck parrot costs Rs. 500/-. Someone told me that it is not legal to sell this bird. Is this true? if not then where can I buy one?

    1. Yes Sabrina it is illegal to sell or buy this parrot in India, but if you want to have one than go for any bird shop most of them sell this bird and one sure site address is bird shops near "Lal Quila" in delhi....but buy Cockatiel instead they are very play-full and look beautiful.

  8. Hi Hemant,

Recently I got a young male indian parrot. It accidently came into my house and now very friendly with my mom. I came to know it is young male from image in your post only. (Thnx for that :))
I kept the cage in my window and now it is continuously shouting. It doesn't seems to be angry and we are feeding him with fruits and vegetables only.
Is it a natural characteristic or something very specific abt them?
Is it a good idea to find a female companion to keep with him?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Buddy your parrot is feeling lonely that's why he is doing this. So either you start spending more time with him or you can put female with him. But recognising female n male in their early age is impossible so kindly select with trusted bird shops only!!

and why some breed costs so high like macaws and all

    1. Dear Suraj, you n I can't judge in lutino Cockatiel which is male n which one is female, only breeder can tell you n only after 6 to 10 months. Its very difficult in lutino cases. The answer for why sum breeds are more costly, reason depends on their availability n breeding habits. For ex. Macaws breeding time is every 10 year or so....thats why they are costly coz they are precious birds....!!

  37. My dear friends, I am a professional bird trainer and have trained Macaws, Cockatoos and African Greys. I have also been all over India in my search to buy good birds at reasonable rates.

The rates for birds which Hemant has published are 100% accurate. This is exactly the price as of December 2012. They may vary a few thousands more or less, but you will never find them for say 10,000 rupees lesser.

The reason I am sharing this is because there are a lot of Conmen (chor in Hindi) on the Internet who will advertise say an African Grey for 20,000 rupees, or say that they are planning to give away their pet bird for adoption and all you have to do is send them the shipping charges which could be around $300 or more, so they can send you the bird.

PLEASE DON'T FALL FOR SUCH TRAPS!

Many people have been CHEATED like this whom I know. If someone is selling a pet bird for a very cheap price, go and meet the person and pick up the bird, or if the bird is in another city, have a friend from that city pick it up for you!

DO NOT TRANSFER MONEY INTO ANYONE'S ACCOUNT THINKING THEY WILL SEND YOU THE BIRD!

I just felt that I need to place this warning here, because it is so sad to see bird lovers being cheated like this. Hemant has done a very good job in giving us the approximate rate and as I said earlier - THIS IS THE CURRENT RATE FOR THE BIRDS MENTIONED ABOVE. Please do not be deceived by anyone offering these birds at a dirt cheap price!

    Regards
    Prem!

Thanks for this post. I am planning to buy lutino cockatiel from Red Fort. However, need your suggestion on how old should be the birds(2-3 weeks won't become very small for me to take care of them?). I want them to be attached to me so that they can be easily put out of cage when required. Also, can we get cage from Red Fort bird market and what should be the dimensions for it? Thanks in Advance.

  83. Hemant Sachan, kindly refrain from carrying out this inhumane business. It just shows how desperate you are for money. I strongly and sincerely believe in the saying "Work is worship" and that no work should be considered to be small, unless it's something like this i.e. immoral and unethical.

This is no different from earning a living out of slaughtering innocent animals or birds. Had I been in your place, I'd rather die than do something as shameful as this. This is not even the last thing one should resort to. These birds deserve to live more than any of us. They haven't and will never harm you, you know that very well.

You're only taking advantage of their inabilities. You have been allotted enough brains to determine what is right and wrong. I'm sure you won't have a single point to vindicate what you're doing. Better late than never - stop this right away! Set them all free, please and be a hero.

Lastly, keep in mind the following:

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” - Mahatma Gandhi

The above mentioned, applies to individuals as well.

    2. In that case, don't even bother posting the prices, please. Don't you think people who buy birds to keep them caged, do not deserve and ought not to be protected from being cheated?

Ripusudhan Singh, Hemant is right. Don't buy a bird for your daughter. On the contrary, you should be teaching her that how it's very wrong to do so. After all, education begins at home.

i think we all are getting in to unnecessary discussions, also dear jaimin i appreaciate hemant's efforts and his vast knowledge on this particular subject and kind of work he is doing. as far as my teachings are concern u are right education begins at home, but since u have intiated the topic i shall u that we never teach her that pets are to be kept in cage infact we buy them, keep them for some time and once they are healthy enough to fly and sustain in the environment we free them.also, u would be surprised to know that many of them have come back they eat, play and fly back again.

  101. Hey Hemant,
i have had parrots before, including Indian parrot. However now 'm planning on buying a macaw.
I need to know which one of Scarlet macaw, blue& gold macaw & green winged macaw is most active and easily learns words/talks more.
will these birds be able to survive in the heat of Delhi or they need AC rooms n all ?
Also can these macaws fly ? if yes, how large a cage should i go for.
Is there any particular feed available for these macaw's or they eat the ususal fruits and other things which i have fed my parrots earlier ? This question stems from the fact that i have seen them chipping down large stems of trees in Thailand.
Would appreciate a early reply :)
